CASTING OUT COMPLACENCY
ANYTIME ZDENO CHARA IS playing for your team, there will be no crutches. Unless, of course, the hockey world’s largest living land mammal steps into an opposing forward and things go badly. But when it comes to making excuses, there will not be any from the Slovaks or their star defenseman. The Slovaks are an underdog with a dearth of NHL talent to be sure, but that will not have them happy with earning the participation badge. That much was apparent in 2010 when the Slovaks finished fourth, giving Canada everything it could handle in the semifinal. “We can’t afford to be thinking, ‘Hey, we’ll just go there, play a tournament and it’s OK if we just play mediocre,’ “ Chara said. NO EXCUSES
MALMO, SWEDEN – FOR THE PLAY-ers on Finland, it was a storybook ending. For the raucous Swedish fans at Malmo Arena, it was a grisly nightmare. But Finland beat the Russians, avoiding a quarterfinal match against the…

ANN ARBOR, MICH. – ONCE AGAIN, MOTHER Nature smiled upon the NHL’s annual New Year’s Day outdoor game. The 13 degrees Fahrenheit/-11 degrees Celsius game-time temperature wasn’t entirely comfortable weather for the 105,491 in attendance at Michigan Stadium to see the Red Wings host the Maple Leafs, but the league had to be pleased to showcase its product in the most idyllic setting possible. Sooner or later, the environment is bound to be less cooperative. And on that day, the NHL will have even fonder feelings for how fortunate it’s been with its marquee-event the past six seasons. One day, when it’s too hot or moist to guarantee safe ice or too frigid to guarantee safe viewing, team owners and advertisers will remember how fantastic the experience was in this small…

Behind THE MASK
SHANNON SZABADOS | TEAM CANADA As Szabados tends goal for the Canadian women in Sochi, her mask bears similarity to the jersey crest from 2010 in that the Maple Leaf contains First Nations art within it. The Dave Gunnarsson design also discreetly includes a map of Canada.…
