Several noteworthy players hadn’t signed deals by late July. These are the best, including their bio, last year’s team and how they arrived there.
THIS IS GONNA HURT
The buzzword in Buffalo starts with ‘S,’ but it’s definitely not “Stanley.” “It may require some suffering,” said GM Darcy Regier, setting the tone for a season in which the Sabres will reach for the first overall pick rather than their first Cup. Fans in Buffalo thought they’d already suffered enough. The Sabres have missed the posts-season two straight years and four of the past six and haven’t won a playoff round since 2007. The droughts will lengthen this year under Regier. The GM received a vote of confidence from owner Terry Pegula after selling him on a plan to build through the draft. In the quest to be the best player in the world, some thought Crosby would get more competition from his own teammate, Evgeni Malkin, than he would from his rival. Ovechkin was shaving and combing his hair more regularly…and he had never looked so haggard in his life. Gone were the highlight-reel goals, but more importantly, it seemed the joy of playing hockey had been sucked out of the Russian machine that supposedly never breaks. But lo and behold, the magic just might be back. Perhaps 2013-14 will be the season Crosby and Ovechkin are healthy enough (Crosby) and motivated enough (Ovechkin)…
