JerseyHOUND
It’s a new era in Big D, with all the fancy trimmings. Tom Gaglardi is the owner, Jim Nill his GM and, now, updated uniforms with a fresh logo and color scheme. Will people make fun of “Victory Green” if the Stars get out of the gate slowly? Sure, but it does look good on a jersey, which also gives us a brand new logo. The letter ‘D’ is actually pretty tricky to work with unless you go the Detroit Tigers Olde English route, so this incarnation (dare we call it “ninja” star?) passes the test. Simple stripes and a lace-up collar complete the look.…
WINDY CITY SEQUEL
By beating the B’s in a final for the ages, the once-moribund Blackhawks are again on top. It’s time to party like it’s 2010
LORD OF THE RINGS
IN 1893, MEMBERS OF THE FIRST STANLEY CUP winning team, the Montreal Hockey Club (see pg. 11), were presented with simple, 15-karat gold bands. Awarding rings didn’t become a regular NHL tradition until about 50 years ago. The Montreal Canadiens won 10 Cups before getting their first rings in 1959. Each was 10-karat gold without…
KID WINGS TAKE FLIGHT
MINUS NICKLAS LIDSTROM, Tomas Holmstrom and Brad Stuart, the Detroit Red Wings entered 2012-13 awash in uncertainty. A year later, the future suddenly looks so bright that Detroit GM Ken Holland might have to invest in a pair of shades. An injury-riddled regular season forced the Red Wings to count on several of their farmhands, many of whom came up big-time for them. To further emphasize just how much talent is on the way to Detroit, the Grand Rapids Griffins captured the Calder Cup title, the first time a Wings minor league affiliate has won the American League title since 1991-92. Some of the key players on Grand Rapids were also significant contributors to the Detroit cause this season, guys like center Joakim Andersson, right winger Gustav Nyquist and defensemen Brian Lashoff…
