TRAIL OF THE TRADE
WHEN ETHAN MOREAU PLAYED the last of his 21 shifts against Anaheim April 11, 2010, it marked the end of an era. Moreau was the final traceable piece to The Trade for the Edmonton Oilers, the last ember to burn out from the explosive transaction that rocked the hockey world nearly 22 years earlier. While it’s a stretch to say Gretzky “became” Moreau, the lineage of the most shocking trade we’ll ever see is terrific fodder for history geeks. Here’s the trail. In exchange for No. 99, Marty McSorley and Mike Krushelnyski, the Oilers got Jimmy Carson, Martin Gelinas, $15 million and three first-rounders from L.A. One year later, Carson was dealt to Detroit, along with Kevin McClelland and a pick for Petr Klima, Joe Murphy, Adam Graves and Jeff Sharples.…

FROM BLEAK TO REPEAT
BOSTON Shortly after joining the Chicago Blackhawks late in 2005, Patrick Sharp was given a stack of business cards. On the back, there was a website where fans could log on to get two free tickets to a Blackhawks home game. He was told by the team’s promotions department to give them out to everyone he met. Sharp and his teammates gave out as many as they could, then would look in the stands when the puck was dropped and see a wide swath of nothing but empty seats. Just the year before, the Blackhawks had earned the ignominious honor of being the worst franchise in sports by ESPN. That was back in the dark ages. The team was terrible and management and ownership were paying a steep price for treating their…
WHAT YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT LORD STANLEY’S CUP
BANDS OF BROTHERS From 1927 to 1947, a new band was added almost every year to the trophy, but it became too big. It was re-designed in 1948 and now consists of five removable rings that each takes 13 years to fill. In 2018, the oldest ring will be removed from the top and a new one will be added to the bottom. ETCHING IT IN The first team to have its roster engraved on the Cup was the 1906-07 Montreal Wanderers, with etching done in the inner bowl. Engraving the team’s roster didn’t become an annual tradition until 1924, however, so there are years missing on the original trophy. When the Cup was redesigned, a new collar was added to honor the missing teams. CUT SHORT Aside from 2004-05, the only other season the…
