Where the NHL failed, the American League delivered for fans nostalgic of hockey played in the elements. In mid-January, the AHL held its annual Outdoor Classic at Hersheypark Stadium. In below-freezing temperatures, decked out in toques and eye black, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and Hershey Bears faced off in front of a sellout crowd of 17,311. Fans watched the Eastern Conference rivals battle in rebellious conditions as the game came down to the wire. With the wind blowing and sun setting, the Pens won 2-1 thanks to Paul Thompson’s overtime heroics.…

BACK-END DEALING AND HEALING

JASON GARRISON AND ALEXANDER EDLER have more in common than being a top defense pairing for the Canucks. In 2011-12, Garrison had a career year with 16 goals, which set a Florida Panthers single-season record for defensemen, while Edler had a career-high 49 points. (Garrison’s output was third among blueliners behind Shea Weber and Erik Karlsson, who had 19 goals apiece, and Garrison’s nine power play goals were just two behind Weber, who led that category.) More importantly, however, both defensemen took care of pressing health concerns during the lockout. Garrison (groin) and Edler (back) were injured and paid while the NHL was on hiatus, until medically cleared mid-December. Hopes were high the two would establish instant chemistry for the defending Presidents’ Trophy winners, but the pair’s fingers were crossed that the compacted…

THE REAL DEAL?

Cute analogy with the “Real Wives of the NHL” cover (Jan. 21). I realize you were hurting for subject matter and I’ll admit I was interested to know more, but once I got to the actual article I was a bit puzzled. On the one hand it sounds like you’re trying to quell the “trophy wives” stereotype, but on the other hand you have them posing in tight and revealing clothing. You’re telling us one thing and showing us another. I would have loved to see them as they really are, without all the silly posing. Leah Leitch, Grand Valley, Ont.
