THE AHL AT ITS BEST

Where the NHL failed, the American League delivered for fans nostalgic of hockey played in the elements. In mid-January, the AHL held its annual Outdoor Classic at Hersheypark Stadium. In below-freezing temperatures, decked out in toques and eye black, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and Hershey Bears faced off in front of a sellout crowd of 17,311. Fans watched the Eastern Conference rivals battle in rebellious conditions as the game came down to the wire. With the wind blowing and sun setting, the Pens won 2-1 thanks to Paul Thompson’s overtime heroics.…

JUST ONE THING MISSING

RICK JEANNERET’S VOICE IS IMITATED BY FANS OF ALL AGES throughout Buffalo and beyond. His exuberant style of calling games has poured energy into the heart of Sabres nation for more than four decades and he’s a large part of not only the NHL team, but the entire city. Sweden, with 8.9 percent, is a distant third. Plus, there’s quality to go with quantity: Defenseman Seth Jones could become the third American-born player since 2004 to be selected first overall, after Erik Johnson in 2006 and Patrick Kane the following year. Dan Marr, the director of…

NHL FANS COME BAA-CK IN DROVES

NEW YORK – I RECEIVED A TWEET from an old friend after the first weekend of the season that read: “NHL fans=sheep.” I asked him if that meant he had cancelled his Calgary Flames season tickets this season. “Did not,” was the reply. “But gave away some Flames gear and will not eat/drink in Saddledome again.” If everyone who threatened to totally boycott the NHL after the lockout had followed through with his/her threat when the rubber hit the road, there might have been a problem. But admit it: commissioner Gary Bettman was right all along. The NHL does have the best fans in the world – people who can’t stay away in spite of those who run the sport. And in eight or 10 years when the league puts its…
