Is it the Gargan Cup or the Gremlin Cup? Frankly, Joffrey Lupul doesn’t really care. When the Toronto Maple Leafs winger went over to play in Russia in November, it wasn’t with the idea of winning a Kontinental League championship. With the lockout dragging on, Lupul simply needed to find a place to test the shoulder he had separated at the end of the last season. THE CALGARY FLAMES have not won the Stanley Cup in 24 years, have not been out of the first round in eight and have not even made the playoffs the past three. But goodness, they seem to be right in the thick of things when it comes to league business and labor disputes. In 2004-05, it was the Flames owner, the late Harley Hotchkiss, the chairman of the NHL’s board of governors, who was among Bettman’s most trusted advisors. Hotch-kiss and then-NHL Players’ Association president Trevor Linden held a meeting in January aimed at salvaging the season.
