Ocean Liner
As a Stanley Cup-winning defenseman with 16 years of NHL service on his resume, you would hope Rimouski GM Philippe Boucher would put some effort into his blueline. This season, he’s got a bunch of draft eligibles on the back end including 6-foot-7 Samuel Morin, ranked 57th overall by ISS. Boucher thinks his kid’s still a bit underrated, however. “That’s the problem with the Quebec League,” he said. “We don’t value good, solid defensive defensemen.” Morin covers a lot of ice quickly thanks to his size and can be devastating with his long reach when he drops the gloves. The fact he has yet to score a goal in the ‘Q’ through one season and two months meant very little to his GM. “Sam gets the fact he could have five…

From Bench To Bench Boss
The 2011-12 season was a magical one for Jon Cooper, who captured the Calder Cup and American League coachof-the-year honors with the Norfolk Admirals. It was just his second season on the job, but Cooper is no overnight success. What has made him a closely watched candidate for an NHL job has taken more than a decade. “People wouldn’t believe how I’ve gotten to the AHL,” Cooper said, “but it’s all true.” Cooper now coaches the Syracuse Crunch after Tampa Bay changed its AHL affiliate in the off-season and he’s picked up where he left off last season, leading the Crunch to a 4-1-2 record out of the gate. But Syracuse is just one more stop – from growing up a hockey fan in Prince George, B.C., to attending law school…

SEEKING A SECOND CHANCE
There is more than just a touch of irony here, which shouldn’t be surprising considering the subject. Mike Danton was convicted and incarcerated in a federal prison for plotting to end another man’s life. But in his early days in Sweden last season, he literally breathed life into one of his teammates. Nothing that happens with the former Michael Stephen Jefferson should surprise anyone. The vast majority of people go through life and the only permanent impression they leave is on their loved ones. Not Mike Danton. You’d think in attempting to take a life then saving one would even out the ledger – in his day-to-day existence and in his hockey world – and perhaps give Danton a chance to prove he once again belongs in the best league in…
