The KHL’s Boy Wonder
If there was one Russian prospect scouts missed at the 2012 world juniors, it was Nikolai Prokhorkin. Ninth among European skaters in Central Scouting’s rankings before the 2012 draft, Prokhorkin didn’t go to Alberta this past winter for the WJC, but instead played 15 games with CSKA Moscow, a.k.a. Red Army, in the Kontinental League. In most games, Prokhorkin got prime minutes on the second line, where he centered Alexei Yashin and Nikita Filatov. The 6-foot-2 Prokhorkin noticed a big difference between last season and the year before, when he played just six games. “I remember getting really nervous before the games,” he said. “I feel more confident now. I just get out there and do my job. I don’t care anymore who I’m playing against. Now they’re all just another…

Off-Season Overhaul
THN RADIO The organization really put their money where their mouth is by bringing in Jordan Staal and Alexander Semin, showing people the Hurricanes will be a force to reckon with this year. Is it any different for you now as a coach to have that excitement of seeing what the organization has done this summer? MULLER It’s exciting. Reporters stake out the meetings, hoping for exclusive nuggets on progress, while fans take to the Internet to plan petitions and fallbacks for winter viewing should the league impose another lockout. But who are the movers and shakers on both sides of the table? You know some of the names, but their roles are usually glossed over in favor of sexier discussions on revenue sharing and escrow. Here’s an inside look at the real power play specialists. GARY BETTMAN NHL COMMISSIONER THE COMMISSIONER is the NHL’s master decision-maker, the philosopher behind the structure of the collective bargaining agreement and the man who must distill the opinions of 30 different…

Gunslinger Returns
As much as a lot of NHLers love to visit Montreal, Mike Cammalleri didn’t shed a tear when he was shipped out West to Calgary for Rene Bourque last season. After all, ‘Cammy’ spent 2008-09 in Cowtown and is glad to be back in a city more cosmopolitan than it gets credit for. “That misconception takes place a lot,” he said. “People think of Calgary as honkytonk and farmers – which it is and it has a great cultural background that way – but there’s also a strong natural resources economy and a lot of people living plentiful lives. My family loves it there. It’s a comfortable place and we’re looking forward to moving back.” The feeling is mutual for the Flames. Cammalleri had his best offensive season in his first…
