RAPID REBUILD IN OTTAWA

THE SENATORS SURPRISED many with a competitive season and it might surprise those same people how wellstocked Ottawa is for the future. The Sens ranked fifth in Future Watch, which bodes well with Daniel Alfredsson, Sergei Gonchar and Chris Phillips approaching retirement. SHORT-TERM NEEDS Secondary scoring behind stars Jason Spezza and (soon-to-be restricted free agent) Erik Karlsson is an issue. Ottawa also must add depth and sandpaper to a ‘D’ corps that has just three regulars (Gonchar, Phillips and Jared Cowen) under contract next season. LONG-TERM NEEDS The acquisition of Kyle Turris from Phoenix may yet pay significant dividends, but regardless, Ottawa requires more top-end talent to take some of the up-front scoring pressure off Spezza and Milan Michalek. THE LIGHTNING DEALT top prospect Carter Ashton to the Maple Leafs for Keith Aulie at the trade deadline, but their pipeline is still strong. Many of their prospects helped ice a farm team in Norfolk that won more games in a row than any AHL or NHL team before it. SHORT-TERM NEEDS Goaltending. Even if Dwayne Roloson didn’t struggle like he did, it was likely his last NHL season and backup Mathieu Garon isn’t the long-term starter. Dustin Tokarski got a couple looks again in 2011-12 and though he’s struggled whenever he’s been faced with the challenge, he’s still the top netminder in the system. Unrestricted free agency will be used to fill this hole. LONG-TERM NEEDS Tampa needs help on ‘D’ at some point. Eric Brewer and Mattias Ohlund are signed…
