SHARKS’ TANK ALMOST EMPTY
THE LAST FIRST ROUND draft pick the Sharks cashed in on was Logan Couture in 2007. Finishing second in 2011 Calder Trophy voting helped the two-way pivot prove that selection to be great, but since then GM Doug Wilson has either traded away early picks or, in the case of Charlie Coyle (2010), made the pick, then dealt the player later. The “win now” philosophy is beginning to catch up with the franchise and the cupboards are looking pretty bare. SHORT-TERM NEEDS Scoring has become a problem for the formerly high-flying Sharks. THE BLACKHAWKS’ GREATEST STRENGTH – their topend talent – is also the greatest hindrance to their development. The star power of Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, Marian Hossa and Patrick Sharp up front and Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook on defense gives Chicago the game’s best six-player core, but it leaves little financial room to fill out the roster via free agency. Finding depth, particularly at center and in goal, needs to be done via the draft. SHORT-TERM NEEDS Though the Brendan Morrison trade didn’t yield a great result, it told us the Hawks were desperate for a No. 2 center and didn’t feel Marcus Kruger was ready.
