Weiss Hopes Wait Is Over

Stephen Weiss is a member of a very exclusive, very ignominious club. It’s like the mob, without the getting whacked part. And for some players, it’s almost as difficult to leave. If Weiss, 28, goes the rest of this season without being injured, he’ll have gone 637 games without playing in the playoffs. That’s the fourth-longest non-playoff streak from the start of a career in league history after Olli Jokinen (799 until he played in the 2009 post-season), Guy Charron (734) and Jay Bouwmeester (717 after this season ends). But he’s counting on that changing, when he hopes for the first time to be working on his stick in mid-April instead of his golf clubs. “It’s been some tough years, but we’re finally getting this team to where I want it to…

Curb Your Enthusiasm

There are more thantwice as many fights per game in junior as there are in the NHL and one player, Ty Bilcke of the Ontario League’s Windsor Spitfires, has more fights (36) than 24 of the NHL’s 30 teams. Those are the kinds of numbers that deeply trouble David Branch. “It’s concerning,” said Branch, the commissioner of the OHL and the president of the Canadian League. “That type of situation assists us moving forward to look at how we can bring some balance.” Executives always choose their words carefully when they talk about putting curbs on fighting, largely because of the host of land mines surrounding the whole debate. But according to Branch there is an appetite for at least greatly reducing the number of times players as young as 16 can…

How West Has Won

In our previous issue, a reader from St. Louis accused us of being geographical snobs. “I just wanted to send (you) a recommendation for this league I’ve been watching,” wrote Patrik Kussman. “It’s called the Western Conference. Judging by your recent covers, you’re not aware it exists.” We understand the criticism. We went on a run in which seven of eight Page 1 boys played on teams east of Detroit. Little could the reader know our next four covers, and counting, would feature dudes from the left side of the NHL, including the Blues’ David Backes this week (see pg. 18 for story). But the point remains exploration-worthy. Is there an eastern bias in the media? That the perception exists is undeniable. Our follower in St. Louis has kindred spirits in Vancouver,…

JerseyHound

That little fella on the front of this classic University of Denver sweater is Denver Boone, who reigned supreme as the school’s mascot for decades until the university went a different way (much to the dismay of fans). Sure, he’s cartoony, but you don’t see a lot of mascots on NCAA sweaters and isn’t that what college spirit is about? Modelled after American folk hero Daniel Boone, Denver has enjoyed a resurgence of late and several Pioneers boosters chipped in to get a costume made for public appearances.…
