PENGUINS FANS tore the roof off Civic Arena many times over the years, but with the team finding a new home at the Consol Energy Center, the lid has come off for the last time – literally. The ‘Igloo’ was home to three Stanley Cups and was the first indoor arena with a retractable roof. That iconic 3,000-ton dome has now been demolished, but all that Pittsburgh steel isn’t going to waste. Wendell August has forged a partnership with the Penguins Foundation to recycle it into collectable coasters, bookmarks, money clips, mugs and more. They’ve already sold more than 80,000 pieces with all proceeds going to charity.…

Helping Hands

When the Fresno Falcons of the ECHL folded, Dustin Sproat wasn’t just worried about finding a place to play out the 2008-09 season. He also wanted to continue the work with local children he and some teammates had started in the community. While Sproat found an ECHL home with the Cincinnati Cyclones and won a Kelly Cup the following year, his former Falcons teammates spread across the hockey globe, spawning a non-profit organization, Hockey Players 4 Kids (HP4K), made up of players contributing to the communities in which they play. “We ended up in five different cities, put our heads together and said, ‘Why don’t we formalize this and bring a few more people on board,’” said Sproat, HP4K’s executive director. Crude Reality

Here’s a little something to digest, but it will go down like a swig of cod liver oil if you’re a fan of the Edmonton Oilers: There’s not a single 20-year-old alive who’s seen the Oilers enter a playoff series as the favorite. Yup, last time that happened was 1991, when they took on the Minnesota North Stars in the Western Conference final…and lost. There have been intermittent moments of brilliance from Curtis Joseph and Chris Pronger, but aside from that, it’s been a whole lot of mediocrity since then.
