I'm With Him

A COUPLE NIGHTS AFTER winning the Stanley Cup in 2003, Martin Brodeur took in a basketball game in New Jersey with his brother and some buddies from Montreal. He went to buy a few beers and when he returned, he told them how the crowds parted like the Red Sea when he approached the concession stand. He seemed genuinely astonished and bewildered he didn’t have to wait in line. It was then one of his buddies, Guy Martin, gave him one of those you’ve-got-to-be-kidding-me looks. “It’s because you’re Martin (expletive) Brodeur, that’s why,” an incredulous Guy blurted out. See, that’s where a guy needs an entourage. Perhaps Brodeur forgot for a fleeting second he had just won a Stanley Cup and that he is one of the greatest goaltenders to ever play…

Yoga For Hockey Players

Radius Yoga Conditioning founder and instructor Dana Santas has worked with teams in all four major North American sports. Yoga is usually done three times weekly as a complement to other training and Santas customizes each program for clients’ regimens and needs. “What’s really different with (hockey players) is the potential for traumatic injury,” Santas said. “So I do a lot of work working with knee joints and hips.” Santas focuses on what she calls the ABCs of Yoga: alignment, breath and core. Each exercise should transition from the last smoothly and every movement should be aligned to help improve joint stability and flexibility. 1 RECLINED COBBLER’S…

hydration tips

→ Many NHLers and trainers tout coconut water-based sport drinks as natural since coconut water — not coconut milk — contains most electrolytes, save for sodium. → Even while at work or school, make sure to take in fluids — including those with electrolytes — regularly during the day. → When you drink H2O, try natural spring water. It refreshes the body more effectively, according to one NHL trainer. → Coffee is a diuretic (a product that makes you pee more), but moderate consumption isn’t considered problematic as long as you drink other fluids. → Hydration blurs with nutrition. Many sports drinks with electrolytes also contain sugars, carbohydrates and protein. Carbs and sugars convert quickly to energy, so they’re recommended before games. Protein — e.g., a sports shake — is harder to digest, but…
