A word to Jason Kay’s doctor, who thinks the salaries of pro players are obscene (Editor’s Notebook, Nov. 7). Kids start playing at a young age and spend many extra hours training each week. A youngster’s parents also make huge financial and time investments. Then only a handful of these kids get a real paying job out of it and one in a million have the talent to make the big bucks. Top players only have about 10 good years to get a return on their investment, versus most doctors who retain that job for a lifetime. A Ming vase or a Sidney Crosby is a rare and beautiful thing – and for that people are willing to pay a lot of money.…

Old Barns Still Fresh

Yost Arena is one of the most famous destinations in college hockey and the fact it looks a bit like a cathedral from the outside doesn’t hurt the mystique. Home to the University of Michigan Wolverines, Yost has hosted hockey since 1973, but was originally constructed as a field house in 1922-23 for sports such as basketball. Walking in through big wooden doors under brick arch-ways gives visitors an unmistakable feel for history, but it’s the crowd’s integration into its surroundings that really makes the building rumble. “It’s a great atmosphere,” said Wolverines assistant coach Brian Wiseman. “It’s a tough building to play in if you’re a visitor and we think the guys thrive on that.” Making life so difficult for the road team is the Michigan student section, a roaring mass…

Sounding The Alarm

There’s no better way of proving yourself to be a pressure scorer than having the big stage confront you early on. That’s what Owen Sound center Jarrod Maidens learned when he popped home the winner in Game 7 of the Ontario League final 3:27 into overtime last season. “It means a lot because he did it at key times,” said one scout. “For a 17-year-old to come through – even the fact he was on the ice at the time – is a credit to Jarrod and the trust his coach had.” Maidens brings a big body and good hands, while teammate Gemel Smith (the Attack’s second-leading scorer) comes at you with skill and skating ability. “He’s got an attribute you can’t teach and that’s speed,” said the scout. “He’s slippery.” Maidens…
