New season, new mask for Columbus goalie Steve Mason. Designed by Dave Gunnarson, Mason’s helmet features imagery from Sam Raimi’s cult classic horror film Evil Dead 2, mixed with the Blue Jackets’ Civil War theme. “We went back and forth for a couple weeks on the design and that’s what we came up with,” Mason said. “I think the finished product looks pretty awesome.” We whole-heartedly agree. NHL PLAYERS HAVE the luxury of picking any equipment they want. Some are even paid to use certain gear. But what are the best players in the league using these days? Before Alex Ovechkin switched from CCM to Bauer, we researched what stick and gloves were used by the top-10 scorers from 2010-11, plus the nominees for the Norris and Calder trophies. For goalies, we chose the top 10 in save percentage, plus five of the other more prominent names in the game – Marc-Andre Fleury, Ilya Bryzgalov, Jonathan Quick, Ryan Miller and James Reimer – and found out what pads and catcher-blocker combos they use.
