Rebuilding Lokomotiv
With its team wiped out in the horrific crash of a Yak-42 aircraft on Sept. 7, hockey fans in the Russian city of Yaroslavl will have only their junior club until December. At that time, a new Lokomotiv team will appear, but not in the Kontinental League, the country’s highest competition. New coach Petr Vorobiev will have a pool to choose from of youth players, allowed to transfer to Lokomotiv from other clubs, plus the top junior players from Yaroslavl. The new Lokomotiv club will start playing games in the Major Hockey League, Russia’s second highest league, near the end of the year. It has been guaranteed a spot in the playoffs. It is hoped Lokomotiv will be able to return to the KHL for 2012-13, once again with a guaranteed spot…

Mike Modano is the greatest American hockey player ever. There’s no one better. He’s by far No. 1. When he broke into the league with the Minnesota North Stars, I was with the St. Louis Blues. I remember him the way my dad used to talk about Gilbert Perreault – he was just fun to watch and could do things at such a high level and pace. Playing against him over the years, I was so focused on my own team that I didn’t get an appreciation for all the things he did.
