Ultimate Fantasy Pool Guide 2011-12
The Hockey News has been providing the most comprehensive coverage of the world of hockey since 1947. In each issue, you'll find news, features and opinions about the NHL and leagues across North America and the world.
Streaky Is As Streaky Does
He’s the bane of a fantasy owner’s season. He’s a 90-point player. No, wait a minute, he’s a 30-point player. Actually, he’s both…or neither…and therein lies the problem. The streaky player, or ‘Windex Wonder’ as I’ve coined them at dobberhockey.com, crush rotisserie teams almost as much as injuries do. Except, Windex Wonders can be used for good as well as evil. If you’re in a tight race and you pick up one of them just when they get hot, it’ll put you over the top. Unfortunately, trying to time when to activate and when to bench these players is akin to trying to nail Jell-O to the wall. But when your team is fading and you need to take a shot, plucking a 40- to 60-point player who gets his points in bunches…
One Big Apple Helps Bunch
THE ARRIVAL of Brad Richards will significantly alter the club in a positive offensive way. It’s great news to winger Marian Gaborik, who has never played in the NHL with a playmaker of Richards’ ilk. It’s also good for Brandon Dubinsky, Ryan Callahan, Derek Stepan and the rest of the supporting cast, who will face fewer checking lines. Artem Anisimov, Mats Zuccarello and Wojtek Wolski are three others to keep an eye on. TOP 10 PROSPECTS POWER ZONE Looking to dominate your pool in various categories? ULTIMATE GUIDE SKATERS
THE HOCKEY NEWS profiles the credentials and characteristics of the projected top 270 scoring NHL skaters in 2011-12. That dips down into the 33-point range. If you’re in a deep pool and have to reach below 33 points, check out the projection chart on team pages (which goes as low as 15 points) or the master list on pages 138-142. Youth Attack Ready To Make Dent
THE COYOTES have been veteran-laden for a while, but more youth will be served in 2011-12. Defenseman Keith Yandle will be joined by second-year Swede Oliver Ekman-Larsson as a power play tandem. Kyle Turris will surely play first-line minutes this season, Mikkel Boedker is another breakout candidate, while Brett MacLean will see more NHL time. That said, there is still plenty of veteran influence in the desert. TOP 10 PROSPECTS POWER ZONE Looking to dominate your pool in various categories?
