And when that kind of cake is involved, you know it&rsquo;s more than just poolie geeks who take it seriously.</p><p>Yahoo! is the biggest player in the game. The company&rsquo;s privacy policy won&rsquo;t let employees share the size and scope of its operations, but Yahoo! data centers are scattered around the U.S. and there are approximately 300 servers in each location running 24/7 dedicated solely to fantasy sports. To put that into perspective, <a href="http://THN.com">THN.com</a> runs off one server.</p><p>One well-publicized location is the Yahoo! Computing Coop in Lockport, N.Y. Slated to eventually be a 190,000-square foot complex spread on a 30-acre lot with tens of thousands of servers, it&rsquo;ll be supplied with enough hydro electric power to run 15,000 homes and will still be one of the world&rsquo;s greenest such facilities.</p><blockquote class="pullQuote"><b>&ldquo;FANTASY SPORTS IS A BIG DEAL &ndash; LIKE BILLIONS-OF-DOLLARS-A-YEAR BIG&rdquo;</b></blockquote><p>Despite being a small fish in a big fantasy pond dominated by football, hockey does well for itself. After beginning operations in 1999 with about 300,000 users, Yahoo! hockey is now the official game of the NHL, has doubled its players and is growing in the three-to-five percent range. &ldquo;Fantasy hockey has probably been the most stable in its pattern of increasing year over year,&rdquo; said David Gellar, senior director and head of fantasy sports at Yahoo!.</p><p>Much of that is because of the &ldquo;engagement&rdquo; level of fantasy hockey users. Basically, hockey poolies are maniacal. &ldquo;We look at the data and check and re-check it,&rdquo; Geller said, &ldquo;the numbers are astounding as to how long people spend in the game.&rdquo;</p><p>In October 2010 alone, Yahoo! fantasy hockey users had more than 250 million page views and spent more than 200 million minutes in the game. That&rsquo;s more than 90 minutes per person, per week just playing the game. That&rsquo;s a lot. Geller also talked about &ldquo;growing drumbeats&rdquo; for things like scoring category changes. That&rsquo;s because hockey has unique problems when it comes to scoring and sorting.</p><p>In baseball, if a player spends 10 games at first base, he&rsquo;s a first baseman. And if he then spends 10 games in right field, he&rsquo;s a first baseman and a right fielder. Ten games is the MLB-mandated minimum for positional eligibility. But in the NHL, there&rsquo;s no such official designation. Henrik Zetterberg is a left winger at times and a center at others. But Yahoo! and other sites have a hard time officially saying so because the NHL doesn&rsquo;t. The same goes for injuries. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s a fine line waiting for an official designation from the league versus &lsquo;this guy broke an ankle, it&rsquo;s clear he&rsquo;s not going to play for the next month,&rsquo; &rdquo; Geller said.</p><div class="figure-block image-bleed"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0014-021690/9775887-1-eng-US/f0014-022.jpg" title="f0014-02" width="1023" height="666"><figcaption class="caption-body"><p><b>FANTASY FARMS</b></p><p><b>At the Yahoo! Matt Romig used to think pools were &ldquo;the dumbest thing in the world,&rdquo; but coming out of the lockout, he was the Yahoo! fantasy hockey columnist. That&rsquo;s pretty good for someone born and raised in California whose introduction to the NHL came via pools.</p><p>Romig started at Yahoo! in 1999 as a fantasy troubleshooter. &ldquo;I always thumbed my nose a bit at fantasy people,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;Watching them jump allegiances from one minute to the next&hellip; I never got the &lsquo;one second you&rsquo;re cheering for someone who hit a home run for the Cubs (the next you&rsquo;re not).&rsquo; &rdquo;</p><p>Yahoo! didn&rsquo;t have any original editorial content at the time. But the competition did, so those who knew the product best began writing; the rest is history. &ldquo;The next thing I knew I was No. 89 on (THN&rsquo;s 2011) most influential people in hockey list,&rdquo; Romig deadpanned, correctly.</p><p>So it&rsquo;s not a surprise that fantasy sports have changed how the mainstream media covers the field in general. Features and game recaps are still there, but so are goalie announcements, line combinations and injury reports.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

Time to put him out to pasture. Time for him to check out the shuffleboard courts at the old-aged-hockey-player home.</p><p>At the very least it was time to drop him from the fantasy team, which is exactly what one person did, a person whose name appears at the top of this story.</p><p>A couple days later he had a five-point game and quickly thereafter became a steady producer who finished with 52 more points than when he was excused from fantasy play on one fantasy team and became a member of somebody else&rsquo;s.</p><p>Despite that accounting, it was the right play at the time because it honored several realities associated with winning hockey pools: Whitney was an older player and when they lose it, they lose it fast. Players run hot and cold, but a month in the freezer is plenty long enough. And while people put too much stock into what happens in the first couple weeks of the season, there are plenty of replacements capable of more than five points in a month who had been overlooked by everybody in the pool.</p><blockquote class="pullQuote"><b>&ldquo;WHAT YOU DON&rsquo;T DO IN YOUR POOL IS ALMOST AS IMPORTANT AS WHAT YOU DO&rdquo;</b></blockquote><p>Many drafts nowadays allow trading and waivers. If you&rsquo;re stuck with the same players all year long you want the sure things. Better to have 35 points than zero from a guy who was returned to junior.</p><p>But, if you can make constant changes throughout the season, the latter part of your draft should be used for speculation. That&rsquo;s where you get your rookies, sleepers, comeback players, and breakout players.</p><p>Those are the guys who can&rsquo;t lose you your pool, but they can win it for you. If they don&rsquo;t work out, you can still pick up the 30-35 point guy and carry on. If they do work out, you won&rsquo;t care about the 35-point players.</p><p><b>ROOKIES</b> are the biggest crapshoot of that bunch. Last year, 10 rookies managed 40 or more points; the season before just five. Too many variables. They can be sent back to junior, they can be sent to the minors, they can play irregularly like Tyler Seguin last season. The bottom line is that we don&rsquo;t know who&rsquo;s going to make it because the teams themselves don&rsquo;t know. The more a team needs a player to be successful, the better their chances of success. That includes recent draftees such as Gabriel Landeskog in Colorado and Jonathan Huberdeau in Florida.</p><p><b>SLEEPERS</b> are players who slip by others in your pool due to injury or any other number of reasons. You couldn&rsquo;t call Zach Parise a sleeper because everybody knows about him, but they may not consider Travis Zajac, who got caught napping without his favorite linemate around. There&rsquo;s a ton of other quality players every year who lost a lot of time because of injuries. It depends on the savvy of your poolmates and whether they clue in to players such as Derek Roy (35 points in 35 games). In most cases, even if they do recognize them, they&rsquo;ll undervalue them. That means you can pick them up cheap.</p><p><b>COMEBACK PLAYERS</b> are simply guys who had poor seasons and are too good not to return to their established level. Ilya Kovalchuk is your poster boy for this season. You can add in Nicklas Backstrom and about half of his Washington teammates.</p><p><b>BREAKOUT PLAYERS</b> tend to follow patterns. Maybe it&rsquo;s changing a bit in the salary cap era, with players forced into bigger roles because they come cheaper, but some of the old rules still apply. Last season we pointed out Claude Giroux, who jumped from 47 to 76 points (we had him going to 67 points). It was his third season in the league. We used to target players in their fourth campaign for breakouts, but as we said, the times are changing. Players now have no choice but to produce faster. Nikolai Kulemin &ndash; third season; Clarke MacArthur &ndash; third full season; Milan Lucic &ndash; fourth season.</p><p>This year, we&rsquo;ve targeted several players as breakout possibilities, including second-year NHLers Taylor Hall and Tyler Seguin, based somewhat on a new model created by Steven Stamkos. Players with that much talent need less time. Another player we&rsquo;ve targeted for a breakout season is James van Riemsdyk. It&rsquo;s the third season for the second pick overall in 2007 and apart after what he showed in the playoffs, he&rsquo;s ready to move to the next level.</p><p>We&rsquo;ve also included Matt Duchene as one of the players who could have a big point increase. He&rsquo;s in a different category because he&rsquo;s already been quite successful. There were times last season when he looked like he was everywhere at once. He can be a dominant player in his third year.</p><p>What you don&rsquo;t do in your pool is almost as important as what you do.</p><p>The first rule you should learn if you don&rsquo;t already know it is to ignore the pre-season. Every poolie wants an advantage, but some of the less experienced think they&rsquo;re going to get it in the pre-season. There&rsquo;s nothing you need to know about what&rsquo;s going on there. There is more likely to be more misinformation than anything you can use.</p><p>Fantasy leaguers are also keen on who a particular player is playing with. Sure it&rsquo;s important, but it&rsquo;s more important to know if he&rsquo;s a top six or a bottom six. There is a definite division between the two. Sometimes a player can move up &ndash; like we saw Tyler Kennedy in Pittsburgh do for a while last season &ndash; and some rare teams have three scoring lines. Otherwise, separate the two and assume they don&rsquo;t mix.</p><p>Take the example of Kris Versteeg last year. With the Stanley Cup-winning Blackhawks the season before, he was a very good third-liner. The Toronto Maple Leafs tried to make him into a first-liner. He was still a very good third-liner.</p><p>During the season, if you can make trades, buy low and sell high. That&rsquo;s what NHL GMs would like to do, but trading partners aren&rsquo;t likely to be fooled. Frustration levels and boiling points in your fantasy league are quite a bit lower.</p><p>Especially early in the season, find those players who should be doing much better and consider offering your own players who are performing above expectations.</p><p>The thing is, nobody likes to lose a trade. Less experienced fantasy players are quick to reject a trade proposal because they think they&rsquo;re being taken. Make them feel better &ndash; make the first offer lop-sided in your favor. When they turn it down, come back with a new offer that&rsquo;s fairer. They&rsquo;ll feel better about it, maybe enough to make the trade. Blake Geoffrion fired a hat trick in his 11th NHL game with Nashville last season. Shades of his grandfather, &lsquo;Boom Boom,&rsquo; or his great-grandfather, Howie Morenz? Not quite yet. In his next 21 regular season and playoff games he scored a total of zero goals.</p><p>Matt Calvert had seven goals over a six-game span for Columbus. Fantasy players couldn&rsquo;t grab him fast enough off the waiver wire. He had one more goal in his next 21 games.</p><p>If something looks too good to be true, it probably is. If it looks too bad to be true, it probably isn&rsquo;t.</p><p>And finally, if Ray Whitney has five points the first month of the season, wait a couple more days before moving him.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

There were no websites or databases, just a bunch of guys in a room picking players based strictly on points.</p><p>Then a few years later, some interesting twists were thrown in &ndash; we each had to take a rookie and a goalie. While my fellow poolies were wasting early picks on the premier freshmen and stoppers, I concentrated on scorers, then used my last pick to take a rookie goalie, tiptoeing around the rules. Turned out Daren Puppa won 17 games for me and my big scorers carried me to victory.</p><p>Fantasy hockey has come a long way since then. Very few quality rookies, or goalies, slip through the cracks in hardcore rotisserie leagues. Check out John Grigg&rsquo;s feature on the Yahoo! operation and you&rsquo;ll see why. Also, read Ryan Kennedy&rsquo;s story on the plethora of statistical categories used in fantasy leagues.</p><p>One of the keeper pools I&rsquo;m in now reaches deep into the numbers realm, including stats such as hits, blocked shots and penalty minutes. Another includes shots and faceoffs. We&rsquo;ve incorporated some of these numbers on the NHL team pages by showing top five leaders in various categories. All of a sudden, players such as Cal Clutterbuck, Zenon Konopka and Matt Martin have greater value than the likes of Tim Hunter, Garth Butcher and Dave Semenko did in my early pool days.</p><p>But if it&rsquo;s strictly points you want, our checklist starting on page 138 is all you need. The Evolution Of Hockey Pools

<div class="byline">By Rory Boylen</div><p class="dropcap"><b><span>T</span>here&rsquo;s no denying the NHL</b> is a young man&rsquo;s league and it&rsquo;s been that way since 2005. Alex Ovechkin, Patrick Kane, Bobby Ryan, Matt Duchene and Jeff Skinner all were baby-faced stars who burst onto the NHL scene with fruitful performances. In fact, the past four first overall picks all went straight to the NHL the following season.</p><p>But will Ryan Nugent-Hopkins continue that trend? Conventional wisdom surrounding RNH before his selection by the Oilers was that he would benefit from another season in junior where he could dominate and bulk up on his slim 6-foot, 171-pound frame. So in that sense he&rsquo;s a risky pick for one-year poolies, but it&rsquo;s a gamble that would pay off in a big way if he sticks with the youthful Oilers. We don&rsquo;t recommend you pick him early in a one-year hockey pool.</p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0008-012354/9775476-1-eng-US/f0008-012.jpg" title="f0008-01" width="274" height="374"></div><div class="figure-block image-bleed"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0008-021799/9775469-1-eng-US/f0008-022.jpg" title="f0008-02" width="1433" height="1360"><figcaption class="caption-body"><p><b>BRAYDEN SCHENN</b></p><p><b>50 POINTS</b></p> <span class="photo-credit">(SCHENN: NOAH GRAHAM/NHLI VIA GETTY IMAGES)</span></figcaption></div><h2><b>1 RYAN NUGENT-HOPKINS, C, EDMONTON, 55 points</b></h2><p>The first overall pick in the 2011 draft, Nugent-Hopkins must bulk up some, but his sublime vision with the puck is undeniably NHLready. With other Oilers youngsters around him, Nugent-Hopkins will have electric teammates to create highlight-reel plays with and help pad his points as a rookie. He may be returned to junior, but THN pool guru Murray Townsend says he&rsquo;s good for 55 points as an 18-year-old.</p><h2><b>2 BRAYDEN SCHENN, C, PHILADELPHIA, 50 points</b></h2><p>The No. 1-ranked prospect in THN&rsquo;s 2011 Future Watch, Schenn&rsquo;s offensive potential is unquestionable, as his Canadian record-tying 18-point performance at the World Junior Championship showed. Schenn might have a harder time cracking the first two lines in Philly than he would have in L.A., but with NHL and American League games already under his belt his adjustment period will be shortened.</p><h2><b>3 RYAN JOHANSEN, C, COLUMB US, 45 points</b></h2><p>It&rsquo;s fitting the No. 1-ranked prospect is followed on this list by the No. 2-ranked prospect. Johansen was another key contributor for Canada at the WJC and along with his superior offensive vision, also has a knack for defensive hockey. Johansen will be a top-six forward and have a productive first pro season.</p><h2><b>4 GABRIEL LANDESKOG, LW, COLORADO, 44 points</b></h2><p>Considered the most NHL-ready draft prospect in terms of ability, body maturity and all-around play, Landeskog was dropped by the OHL Kitchener Rangers to make room for another European player because of the certainty he&rsquo;ll be in the NHL in 2011-12. Landeskog will never be a league-leader in points, but he&rsquo;s responsible everywhere and that alone will create scoring chances for himself and his linemates.</p><h2><b>5 JONATHAN HUBERDEAU, C, FLORIDA, 35 points</b></h2><p>Should the Panthers rush another top prospect to the NHL, Huberdeau will get his fair share of points because, well, the points have to come from somewhere and the Saint John Sea Dog will get his chances on a thin team. He exploded in the Quebec League last season so his offensive skills are ready for the next challenge.</p><h2><b>6 STEPHANE DA COSTA, C, OTTAWA, 33 points</b></h2><p>A college free agent from Merrimack, Da Costa will attempt to be one of the few of his type to become a difference-maker at the NHL level. He didn&rsquo;t have a point in a four-game call-up last season, but that&rsquo;s not enough games from which to draw a conclusion. Da Costa&rsquo;s playmaking abilities are undeniable and he&rsquo;ll probably start the season getting ample ice time for the Senators.</p><h2><b>7 MARC-ANDRE GRAGNANI, D, BUFFALO, 33 points</b></h2><p>The 2005 third-rounder has never struggled for points. He was better than a point-per-game player in his final two junior seasons and accumulated 52 in his first 78 games in the American League. Gragnani played the final nine games for Buffalo last season, but he really became noticeable in the playoffs when he posted seven points in seven games. Playing the power play with Christian Ehrhoff will aid his production.</p><h2><b>8 RYAN ELLIS, D, NASHVILLE, 33 points</b></h2><p>If you think small defensemen can&rsquo;t make it in the NHL, just ask Dan Boyle or Tobias Enstrom. If, as those two did, Ellis can overcome his most obvious shortcoming, he&rsquo;ll be a boon for the Predators. A two-time Memorial Cup champion and reliable captain in junior, Ellis has a number of good traits that will take him a long way in the NHL.</p><h2><b>9 NINO NIEDERREITER, RW, ISLANDERS, 32 points</b></h2><p>He started 2010-11 with the big club and became the youngest player in franchise history to score a goal. &lsquo;El Nino&rsquo; didn&rsquo;t let his return to junior dampen his spirits as he topped his impressive totals from the year before despite playing 10 fewer games. Niederreiter has good size, which will allow him to adapt quickly to the pro game and his goal-scoring ability will add another integral piece to the Islanders&rsquo; core.</p><h2><b>10 MATT TAORMINA, D, NEW JERSEY, 31 points</b></h2><p>Coming off a 50-point season in the AHL, Taormina was supposed to be a part of the new-age Devils defense last season, but an ankle injury cut his year short. Nevertheless, the Providence grad was off to a good start with five points in 17 games when his season ended. Taormina will be given a fair amount of ice time and will contribute.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

The emotional side of you knows it&rsquo;s going to taste great, but the rational side knows that if you do it, you&rsquo;ll wake up tomorrow all bloated. And, really, who wants that?</p><p>You know who he is. He&rsquo;s the guy who&rsquo;s sitting there &ndash; just sitting there! &ndash; and it&rsquo;s your pick in the annual fantasy draft. You look at him, warts and all, and you&rsquo;re really, really tempted to take him because you know he might have a great year. Then again, he might develop the longest lingering case of hangnail in NHL history and miss most of the season.</p><p>In the business world, they call it high risk/high reward. In the fantasy draft world, it&rsquo;s more known as &ldquo;I can&rsquo;t believe I took this donkey and ended up losing by three points.&rdquo;</p><p>All right, that might be a bit harsh. But there are most certainly players out there who should come with a Buyer Beware disclaimer. They&rsquo;re the ones who tease you by putting up a good offensive season or perhaps put together a torrid streak at the end of a season, but are also prone to injuries, demotions down the depth chart and extended slumps.</p><p>It doesn&rsquo;t mean they aren&rsquo;t good players, it simply means you should either, a) stay away from them in your hockey pool or, b) swallow hard before taking one of them.</p><p>After all, the only thing worse than feeling all bloated in the morning is watching your fantasy hockey team go down the sinkhole because your first round pick has a groin injury&hellip; again&hellip;or has been demoted to the fourth line&hellip;again.</p><p>Every team has one. Here they are. It&rsquo;s common for prominent pending UFAs to sign extensions during the season, but with a round of collective bargaining negotiations on the horizon &ndash; the current deal ends after this season &ndash; teams will be more likely to wait and see how the economic landscape evolves before committing to big deals.</p><p>There&rsquo;s a perception out there that players are apt to overperform statistically in their final season of a contract in order to attract lucrative offers as they hit the open market. We&rsquo;ve identified pending 2012 UFAs in our player profile section (<i>see pg. 54</i>), but here are 10 who present particular points of intrigue.</p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0012-021787/9775811-1-eng-US/f0012-022.jpg" title="f0012-02" width="154" height="154"></div><h2><b>PEKKA RINNE, 28, AND RYAN SUTER, 26, NASHVILLE</b></h2><p>The theme of free agency is excess, so let&rsquo;s start by bending our own rules and profiling two players off the hop. It only makes sense to lump this Preds pair together because both play a crucial role in the team&rsquo;s success. Rinne&rsquo;s stellar .930 save percentage and 2.12 goals-against average were lost in the shuffle because of Tim Thomas&rsquo; outrageous numbers. Suter has become an absolute stud in Nashville, leading all Preds &ndash; including Shea Weber &ndash; with 28:51 of average ice time in the playoffs. Suter&rsquo;s cap hit is $3.5 million, while Rinne&rsquo;s is $3.4. Both are in line for a substantial raise, which will be interesting given Nashville&rsquo;s budget-conscious approach.</p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0012-031156/9775804-1-eng-US/f0012-032.jpg" title="f0012-03" width="153" height="154"></div><h2><b>PATRICK SHARP, 29, CHICAGO</b></h2><p>The speedy Blackhawk, who can play both wing and center, posted a career-high 71 points, a total that would have been even better had he not missed eight games with a knee injury. Feels like Washington isn&rsquo;t convinced he&rsquo;s long-term relationship material.</p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0012-08272/9775769-1-eng-US/f0012-082.jpg" title="f0012-08" width="154" height="154"></div><h2><b>NIKLAS KRONWALL, 30, DETROIT</b></h2><p>Sooner or later, the loss of Nicklas Lidstrom will mean Detroit&rsquo;s blueline needs a new linchpin. With varied off-ice interests, who knows how badly Avery even wants another deal?<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

For Love And Money

<p class="dropcap"><b><span>T</span>he player projections</b> you see in the following pages were crunched by our long-time pool guru, Murray Townsend. He bases his assessments and evaluations on a variety of data that is constantly changing in the NHL</p><p>This off-season, for example, Townsend made note of the fact many teams are loading up on NHL veterans rather than being economical and leaving spots open for rookies. The ultra-competitive landscape and the rising salary floor are the reasons why. &ldquo;A lot of rookies aren&rsquo;t even going to get a shot,&rdquo; Townsend said. &ldquo;I believe it&rsquo;s just a one-year deal, though, not a trend.&rdquo;</p><p>The growing awareness of concussions and guidelines designed to prevent injured players from rushing back early will play havoc with his projections. He&rsquo;s saying a healthy Sidney Crosby will win the scoring derby this season, but another hit to the head may keep &lsquo;The Kid&rsquo; out for a long time. &ldquo;It wasn&rsquo;t even a consideration two or three years ago,&rdquo; Townsend said.</p><p>The number of star players who were injured or had off years last season exceeded anything the pool guru has seen before. But Townsend said elite players return to form far more often than not.</p><p>Townsend didn&rsquo;t anticipate the sluggish numbers of Washington players. He didn&rsquo;t think so many Caps would buy into the defensive focus and let their stats slide. He expects a happy medium this time around.</p><p>Of note in this year&rsquo;s Poolbook is the Jets logo you see accompanying the Winnipeg team and players. And one of the only times we get an opportunity to prove that label correct is during our annual THN fantasy hockey draft. The 2011-12 draft took place in the early summer, as 10 of our staffers put their reputations on the line in a 10-selection snake draft for pride.</p><p>The intention, of course, is to provide you, the poolie, with a sense of how early top players will go in your own draft. Say, for example, if Ryan Getzlaf is still available in the teens in your pool and he went 10th overall in ours, it would be a pretty good decision to take him.</p><p>There are a lot of other factors to consider, of course. Personal preferences, pools with a variety of statistical categories, training camp injuries and emerging dark horses are just a few. But in terms of strictly points, the following list of 100 NHL players is a decent barometer for you to use on draft day.</p><p>You&rsquo;ll notice the order of selection in this mock draft differs from the projected ranking on our NHL checklist pages at the back of this issue. Those prognostications were crunched by fantasy pool guru Murray Townsend using a specific formula. More fodder for you to consider.</p><p>Writer/editor Ryan Dixon had the first choice in our draft and selected Sidney Crosby, gambling that the star&rsquo;s concussion issues would subside by the time fall rolled around. With the second pick, columnist/writer Adam Proteau went with Henrik Sedin. Senior editor Brian Costello &ndash; who won last year&rsquo;s draft due to solid late-round selections &ndash; took Alex Ovechkin third, while designer Erika Vanderveer took Steven Stamkos fourth.</p><p><a href="http://THN.com">THN.com</a> editor Rory Boylen took Daniel Sedin at No. 5; writer/editor Ryan Kennedy grabbed Evgeni Malkin sixth; managing editor Edward Fraser took Pavel Datsyuk No. 7; art director Jamie Hodgson snagged Corey Perry at No. 8; video producer Ted Cooper picked Martin St-Louis ninth; and assignment editor John Grigg capped off the opening round by choosing Getzlaf.</p><p>There were a few surprise selections in the 10th round, as office GMs went off the chart a bit. Evander Kane, P.K. What Would THN Do?

While hockey&rsquo;s free-flowing nature puts a bit of a dent in the stat game (how do you measure a defenseman losing an edge on a 2-on-1 or the puck bouncing oddly off a stanchion?), the game is bringing out amateur mathematicians.</p><p>While goals, assists and saves have always been there, the introduction of more specific metrics in recent years has opened up a Pandora&rsquo;s box for poolies. With new categories being tracked and potentially being added to a pool, it&rsquo;s important to know how to take advantage of this trend.</p><p>Shane Malloy is an author and host of <i>Hockey Prospect Radio</i> on XM Radio. He&rsquo;s also working on his third generation of statistical analysis on hockey and sees a lot of possibilities on the near horizon. &ldquo;For offensive players, I think you have to look at clutch goalscoring,&rdquo; Malloy said. &ldquo;You can have two 30-goal scorers, but they may not be equal. You look at which players score the most game-winning goals, first goals, insurance goals &ndash; those have a direct impact on the game. Those players are the most valuable and they&rsquo;ll be on the ice more because coaches recognize that. Do they score at home, do they score on the road, do they score on back-to-back nights? Scoring on back-to-back nights is absolutely crucial.&rdquo;</p><blockquote class="pullQuote"><b>&ldquo; YOU CAN HAVE TWO 30-GOAL SCORERS, BUT THEY MAY NOT BE EQUAL&rdquo;</b></blockquote><p><a href="http://THN.com">THN.com</a>&rsquo;s annual Campbellnomics is a similar measure for clutch goals and both metrics can be very valuable for poolies in keeper leagues. After all, the junior and college hockey ranks are filled with players who could get it done against their own age group but had no luck in the big leagues. Malloy points to Edmonton&rsquo;s Jordan Eberle and Carolina&rsquo;s Jeff Skinner as examples of players who trended towards being valuable NHL assets. Skinner in particular got on the board fast. &ldquo;If you look back to his draft year, he scored 50 goals (with Ontario League Kitchener), but 25 of them were clutch goals,&rdquo; Malloy said. &ldquo;You could see how that would translate over to the NHL. Did anybody expect him to do it at 18? No, nobody did. However, that happens. Great for him.&rdquo;</p><p>Many hockey websites now have great unique stats and info for poolies; the key is to suss out the good stuff. <a href="http://Hockey-reference.com">Hockey-reference.com</a>, for example, has the goals-created metric, which gives players credit not only for tallies, but also a partial credit for assists (going by the logic one goal can have two helpers). The site also measures offensive points share, which is the percentage of scoring attributed to one player on a team. These stats can be illuminating come playoff time, as the trend for the year has already been established.</p><p>But it&rsquo;s not just about numbers. Some stat sites, such as <a href="http://dobberhockey.com">DobberHockey.com</a>, offer recent line combinations and power play units. If one of your players isn&rsquo;t getting that prime ice time, you&rsquo;ll want to know so you can bench him in favor of another. Knowing the starting goaltender for a game can also be key, since you can&rsquo;t get the &lsquo;W&rsquo; if your guy is on the bench.</p><p>Speaking of goaltenders, they&rsquo;re typically the hardest to figure out off the ice and that goes for numbers, too. While Dobber Hockey will give you a netminder&rsquo;s three-year average for wins and save percentage, those stats can be thrown off by instances, such as Tim Thomas losing a year to Tuukka Rask in Boston&rsquo;s net or Carey Price getting the lion&rsquo;s share of starts in Montreal after Jaroslav Halak was traded in the summer.</p><p>But in some cases, good old-fashioned research may be needed to go with your instincts on picking a goalie. &ldquo;All of them are so well-coached now, you can&rsquo;t even look at statistics,&rdquo; Malloy said. &ldquo;You actually have to go and watch them play and look at body language and how they react. I know that&rsquo;s a lot for poolies, but if you want to beat your buddy, you have to go that extra mile.&rdquo;<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

Flyers Finally Find A Goalie

GMs clamor to piece together their championship puzzle while players shop themselves for their newest jersey. Armchair GMs around the hockey world speculate on who got the best deals and who overpaid, while casually discussing which of their least-favorite teams circumvented the cap.</p><p>What often gets lost in all of the action are those left behind, the late signings that impact the league far beyond all expectations.</p><p>In 2010, Sean Bergenheim and Raffi Torres both went unsigned for a long period of time before getting calls from Tampa Bay and Vancouver. One year later, Bergenheim and Torres both played important roles on their teams during deep playoff runs and both players found eager employers on the first day of free agency.</p><p>The opening weekend of the 2011 frenzy saw names such as Richards, Leino and Wisniewski go early, while others were forced to wait patiently for new contracts. At the time of publication, veterans such as Vaclav Prospal, Bryan McCabe and Ray Emery were still without new teams. Fans and franchises alike were also waiting to see whether or not Teemu Selanne would return for another year after an 80-point season &ndash; his highest total since 2006-07.</p><p>By the time you&rsquo;re reading this issue, we&rsquo;ll be close to the start of training camp. He&rsquo;s a 90-point player. No, wait a minute, he&rsquo;s a 30-point player.</p><p>Actually, he&rsquo;s both&hellip;or neither&hellip;and therein lies the problem. The streaky player, or &lsquo;Windex Wonder&rsquo; as I&rsquo;ve coined them at <a href="http://dobberhockey.com">dobberhockey.com</a>, crush rotisserie teams almost as much as injuries do. Except, Windex Wonders can be used for good as well as evil.</p><p>If you&rsquo;re in a tight race and you pick up one of them just when they get hot, it&rsquo;ll put you over the top. Unfortunately, trying to time when to activate and when to bench these players is akin to trying to nail Jell-O to the wall.</p><p>But when your team is fading and you need to take a shot, plucking a 40- to 60-point player who gets his points in bunches could be your best bet. Here are some to watch for:</p><p>RENE BOURQUE, LW, CALGARY &ndash; Bourque had 13 points in nine games early last season. He also had a run of nine games in late February and early March in which he tallied two points on five occasions. Yet in the past two campaigns he has had three six-game pointless runs. His hot/cold streaks tend to run six to 10 games at a time.</p><p>MARTIN ERAT, RW, NASHVILLE &ndash; In the past seven seasons, Erat has tallied exactly 49 points three times, 50 twice and 57 twice. The end results are quite consistent, but within those results are more ups and downs then the price of gas. How many five-game runs in the past two seasons did he get at least six points? The answer is six.</p><p>TOMAS FLEISCHMANN, LW, FLORIDA &ndash; Fleischmann&rsquo;s streaks are of the longer variety. Usually 10 or 20 games. &lsquo;The Flash&rsquo; started 2009-10 with 11 points in 10 games, but ended the season with four in 13. Last season, he had 10 in 23 with Washington&hellip;and then 21 in 22 with Colorado. These longer streaks are easier to deal with in roto leagues.</p><p>TOM GILBERT, D, EDMONTON &ndash; Gilbert&rsquo;s streaky-style is easier to handle, once you understand it. In 2010-11, he started off with 15 points in 56 games and ended with 11 points in 23. In 2009-10, he began with 12 in 66 before ending with 19 in 16. The strategy? Don&rsquo;t draft him, but pick him up at the end of February.</p><p>CURTIS GLENCROSS, LW, CALGARY &ndash; In December, Glencross went on a run of 17 games when he managed just one assist. He also had just two points in the final eight games and one in the first five. The rest of the time? Thirty-nine points in 49 games.</p><p>MIKHAIL GRABOVSKI, C, TORONTO &ndash; Four times last season, he went four games without a point. But on seven different occasions last year, he went on point streaks that lasted at least three games. Streaky in spurts &ndash; the most difficult to manage in fantasy leagues &ndash; means often you&rsquo;re forced to just keep him active.</p><p>KRISTIAN HUSELIUS, LW, COLUMBUS &ndash; Huselius is the king in my books, the standard all streaky players strive for. Even the end result is inconsistent: 39 points one year, 77 the next, 23 last season, 63 the campaign prior. But those inconsistent campaigns are sprinkled with hot/cold runs throughout. If you own him, you may want to attach a cushion to your desk to soften the blow against your skull.</p><p>ANDREI KOSTITSYN, LW, MONTREAL &ndash; Ah, the Kostitsyn brothers. There were times I was convinced there was just one Kostitsyn and he would play in Andrei&rsquo;s uniform for a week or two and then pull on Sergei&rsquo;s sweater for the following week. A pylon would take his place when he&rsquo;s wearing the other uniform.</p><p>SERGEI KOSTITSYN, LW, NASHVILLE &ndash; He started his Nashville career with three points in 19 games, then he had 30 in his next 33 contests. He followed that up with two points in 13 outings, before finishing with 15 in 12.</p><p>MATT MOULSON, LW, N.Y. ISLANDERS &ndash; Four times last season he went on five- or six-game runs scoring a point or no points. He also had a streak of 19 points in 21 games back in February and March. Usually, his hot runs can be tied to the Islanders&rsquo; hot runs.</p><p>ALEX STEEN, C, ST. LOUIS &ndash; He had a slump in November (two points in 10 games) and he finished the campaign with just seven in his last 15. Otherwise, the 27-year-old had 42 points in 47 contests. He had similar numbers in 2009-10. When he gets hot, the Blues take advantage of it and use him on the first power play unit.</p><p>RADIM VRBATA, RW, PHOENIX &ndash; Fourteen multi-point games last season, accounting for 62.5 percent of his numbers. Often he would have one or two one-point games leading up to or following up a multi-point game. These mini-streaks are the most difficult of all to anticipate. So best to either keep him active or stay away from him altogether.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>
