The Word On Ward
Two years ago, Joel Ward waited until the start of free agency before agreeing to a new contract with Nashville. It was a long wait, too, given that he was 28 and just finished his rookie season with 17 goals and 35 points. Now 30, the right winger is headed for unrestricted free agency again. This time it might be interested teams that wait – in line. With team highs of seven goals and 13 points in Nashville’s longest playoff run to date (12 games), Ward negated any negative regular season impact and expanded interest in his services. “The regular season wasn’t his best,” said Nashville GM David Poile. “But he’s been a very valuable and versatile player for us.” Poile has expressed his desire to bring back the 6-foot-1, 218-pounder, but the…

HE SAID What!?
Think of how few institutions we have left. Nobody’s religious anymore. Nobody believes in the government anymore. Most people work for employers they don’t trust. What brings us together? What gives us hope? What the hell else other than a good movie or a good bottle of wine? – PIERRE BOIVIN, OUTGOING CANADIENS PRESIDENT, ON THE HABS’ PLACE IN THE SOCIAL AND CULTURAL FABRIC OF QUEBEC.…

Leaf Land Lullabies
The Toronto Maple Leafs may not be up for any NHL awards this year, but thanks to the musical stylings of Matt Lashoff and Mark Owuya, a Grammy is not out of the question (or, more likely, really is). Leafs blueliner Lashoff recently dropped his debut album “Living on Heart,” a collection of 11 songs by hockey’s answer to John Mayer. The album includes memorable tracks such as Save Me, While We Cry, Fall Apart and Wasting Away. A soundtrack for Lashoff’s first-year experiences with the Leafs perhaps? In Sweden, newly signed Leafs goaltender Owuya, who is of Russian and Ugandan descent, took to the streets in an attempt to launch his hip-hop career. After appearing on Sweden’s version of American Idol, the rapper known as “Mark In Da Park” followed his…

Cashing In Come July
The irony was not lost on Canucks blueliner Kevin Bieksa. After enduring a summer of inquiries about being squeezed out of a crowded Vancouver defense, Bieksa entered the West final answering questions about his new role as their best D-man. “I’m just surprised all you guys didn’t get fired with all these rumors that went around,” he said. “But, no, it’s not something I’m looking back at.” Nor is he looking ahead to similar questions about potentially leaving the team that drafted him 151st in 2001 come July 1. Bieksa is a UFA July 1 and his increasing ice time and importance to the Canucks will make it tough to retain him, as well as Christian Ehrhoff and Sami Salo. Management says it can keep Bieksa and Ehrhoff, but it seems unlikely without…
