Kontos’ Fine Nine

For a couple reasons, this is the perfect time of year to reflect on a great post-season run by Chris Kontos. Not only are we in playoff mode, but with the MLB beginning, it’s fitting to recall Kontos’ production was of Cy Young quality. Named after the legendary pitcher, this unofficial hockey honor goes to a skater whose goal total far exceeds his assists. Thanks to his nine-goal, zero-helper playoff performance for Los Angeles 22 years ago, Kontos was the 1998-99 runaway recipient. “I would’ve had an assist,” Kontos laughed. “In one game, I passed the puck from the corner to John Tonelli in the slot. As Karlsson’s second season winds down and a trip to the World Championship appears in the offing, there’s still plenty of risk/reward to his game. He was leading Ottawa in points with 43 and sporting a minus-33 rating, 865th in the NHL. “It’s been a rough season,” he said. “It’s had its good parts and its bad parts. Overall, I think it’s been an improvement over last year.” There haven’t been many bright spots during this horrible…
