Gary’s Phat Farm
GARY ROBERTS HAS NO ILLUSIONS of what he is and what he isn’t. He is not a certified strength and conditioning coach. He did not go to school to be a nutritionist. He is, like many people, just a guy who tries to eat right, exercise daily and live a healthy lifestyle. But if you were trying to have a successful career in the NHL, you’d be a fool not to listen to the playerturned-trainer. “Have I taken a lot of courses? No. But I’ve learned from life experiences,” Roberts said. “I know what works for me in terms of energy, recovery and volume of food. I say, ‘Guys, I’m not a nutritionist. For those of you who plan on killing yourself with plyometrics or stair-climbing this summer, we’ve got training shoes perfect for your most arduous workout. But if you’re more of a laidback kinda player, maybe one who can coast through the warmer months before turning on the afterburners once serious game time has returned, why not…

They’re one tough workout for a hockey player and a trainer’s perfect tool – the 167 stairs at Calgary’s McHugh Bluff on Memorial Drive. Hall, the top pick in the 2010 draft, plays for the Oilers, but hails from Calgary and is well-acquainted with this stairway. “Running the McHugh Bluff stairs was an integral part of my training,” he said, “and something I’d recommend to anyone looking for a great leg workout.” Added Fleury about the end-of-stair sessions: “You’re pretty much walking down the stairs backwards because your legs won’t bend the other way, due to the load you’re putting on them and the lactic acid build-up.” According to Rich Hesketh, strength and…
