BEING RECRUITED FOR MARKET RESEARCH can rank just above having a root canal on consumers’ popularity lists. That’s not the case when the consumers are hockey players, however. When the sport’s major equipment makers – including Bauer, Reebok-CCM, Easton and Warrior – come calling for input on new products, their most passionate customers enjoy the drill. In fact, young males who blue language and alpha attitudes eschew customary behavior to offer something more insightful. “You think kids that age might (swear) to try to impress others, but they don’t,” said Kolin Watts of 7th Sense Research, who facilitates groups for Warrior. “If you show them a new product, they can break it down and identify what’s different about it. IN A SPORTS CLIMATE marred by blood doping, human growth hormones and fallen heroes, it’s remarkable how far away from the negative spotlight the NHL has remained.
