NEWS Once he became the franchise’s third chairman, Tom Cigarran realized hockey was a very “specialized” business, prompting him to hire two executives with extensive experience in non-traditional markets. VIEWS CEO Jeff Cogen spent the past 15 years with the Dallas Stars and president-COO Sean Henry was with Tampa for the past 11 years. NEWS GM Chuck Fletcher re-signed captain Mikko Koivu to a seven-year, $47.25-million contract that kicks in for 2011-12 and added defense-minded John Madden and Eric Nystrom, plus veteran center Matt Cullen, from free agency. VIEWS The Wild were supposed to usher in a new era of excitement when Jacques Lemaire left town. But a year after signing Martin Havlat and trading for Cam Barker and Guillaume Latendresse, the Wild committed $6.1 million to three players who, combined, will be in tough to outscore Latendresse. The team also hired veteran assistant coach Rick Wilson, whose bread and butter is defensive hockey.…

NEWS The biggest question facing the Stanley Cup-champion Blackhawks entering the 2010-11 season is simply posed, but painful to answer. Is there is enough left to defend their crown? VIEWS Trade winds blew through the Windy City all summer long as eight members of the team left in a massive and necessary salary dump. No defending champion has begun a season with as many holes and question marks since the 1967 expansion draft gutted the Cup-winning Toronto Maple Leafs. Impending salary cap issues thanks to new deals that kick in this coming season for Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and Duncan Keith assured some significant pieces of the Hawks would be sent packing.
