The Hockey News has been providing the most comprehensive coverage of the world of hockey since 1947. In each issue, you'll find news, features and opinions about the NHL and leagues across North America and the world.

Detroit
NEWS Still an elite talent at an age when most players are retired or their skills have deteriorated considerably, Nicklas Lidstrom decided to play n 2010-11 rather than retire, signing a one-year contract with the Red Wings. VIEWS Seldom in NHL history has a 40-year-old had this large an impact on a team’s fortunes. The Wings are Stanley Cup contenders with Lidstrom: the six-time Norris Trophy winner would be irreplaceable if he retired. A slow start meant Lidstrom, for only the second time in 12 seasons, was not a Norris finalist in 2009-10. It is no coincidence the Wings have qualified for the playoffs in each of his 18 seasons.…

Dallas
NEWS The Dallas Stars have been very lucky in goal. They went from Andy Moog to Ed Belfour in 1997 and from Belfour to Marty Turco in 2002. That’s it…and Dallas has the NHL’s third-best regular season record during that time. VIEWS In 2010, the Stars will switch over full-time to Kari Lehtonen. The Finn was the first big acquisition for GM Joe Nieuwendyk and will likely define his administration. Lehtonen, 26, is a project of sorts and the Dallas staff has worked hard with him through the summer. Now, armed with a three-year contract extension, he will be given a chance to show that he can be a No. 1 goalie for the foreseeable future.…

NONE-ON-ONE?
The NHL is going to be looking at a number of issues concerning the future of the game at the World Hockey Summit. Included in those discussions will surely be the rules of the game. I like the idea of revamping the faceoff system. One thing I have never understood was that one team causes a stoppage in play – icing, offside, freezing along the boards, shooting it out of play, etc. – yet they have an equal opportunity to get the puck back via faceoff. If a team causes play to be stopped, the other team should get control of the puck, like it is in soccer and basketball. How can this be done? Place the puck on the dot and blow the whistle. The center, uncontested, can then pull the puck…

Boston
NEWS It has been a productive summer for the Boston Bruins – a team that believes it is a Stanley Cup contender. Not only did Boston pluck talented center Tyler Seguin with the second overall draft choice, the Bruins also addressed offensive concerns with the addition of scoring winger Nathan Horton, while improving their forward depth with Gregory Campbell. VIEWS Despite the advances, the overall picture in Beantown has some cracks. GM Peter Chiarelli has backed himself into a salary cap corner, a short-term headache that requires some fixing. The Bruins find themselves above the $59.4-million ceiling. Indeed, as of late August the team’s cap hit stood at more than $66 million. The team will alleviate some early pressure by putting injured winger Marco Sturm and his $3.5-million cap hit on long-term injury reserve…
