RAISING CALIFORNIA

IT WAS ONE OF THE loudest ovations given on the first night of the NHL draft in Los Angeles, followed by one of the greatest cascades of boos. With the 29th pick – the second-last selection of the evening – the Anaheim Ducks tabbed California-born center Emerson Etem from the Western League’s Medicine Hat Tigers. As soon as the words “from Long Beach…” were uttered on stage, the Los Angeles crowd erupted. When the largely partisan audience of Kings fans then realized Etem was the newest member of their hated Anaheim rivals, they booed lustily, as they had a minute earlier when the Ducks brass walked up on stage. Anaheim

IT TOOK a while, but Emerson Etem finally heard his name at the draft when the Ducks took him at No. 29. The hope is they’ve found a fast player who can become a dynamic goal-scorer some day. “Whether I feel that I should have been picked higher, I know the type of player I am and I know what I can bring to the Ducks organization and that’s speed,” Etem, 18, said. “And that’s grit. He grew up 20 miles from Anaheim in Long Beach with a white father and African-American mother.…

The real question is, when will he finish rising? “I think I’m done growing,” Johansen said. “My dad is only 5-foot-11, so I got my size from my mom’s brothers. I should be done.” The Columbus Blue Jackets grabbed the 6-foot-3, 194-pound Johansen with the fourth overall pick in the 2010 draft, when many expected he’d be taken more toward the bottom of the first 10 selections. His ascent up the draft charts directly correlated to his literal growth as a person. “In my bantam draft I was 150 pounds and 5-foot-9, so my skating stride was a little out of whack there for a couple years, I had the baby moose legs going on,” Johansen said.…
