OFFENSE BOUND TO GET BOOST

THE BRUINS are deep, especially at center. They got even deeper with the selection of No. 2 overall draft pick Tyler Seguin. There is a nice mix of youth and experience up front, while the blueline is led by the incomparable Zdeno Chara. It will be impossible for Boston not to improve offensively in 2010-11, after finishing last in the East in goals. Make no mistake, though: this is still a defense-first outfit. POP-GUN ATTACK SEEKING SIZZLE

THE RANGERS need to improve their offense in 2010-11, since they lack depth. In fact, star right winger Marian Gaborik accounted for 42 of the team’s 222 goals last season. Never before have I seen such differences – call them aberrations – in scoring totals as players go from one team to the next. Lee Stempniak was a lost puppy in Toronto, scoring 14 goals in 62 games. After being traded to Phoenix, he scored 14 goals in 18 games. So what are we to expect in 2010-11? The 20-goal pace he averaged the previous four seasons or his 64-goal clip with the Coyotes? It seemed 17 goals was about what Guillaume Latendresse was good for during parts of four seasons with Montreal. With Minnesota, he…
