BEST OF THE REST HARDCORE HOCKEY

ECHL GAMBLE PAYS Goaltender Jimmy Spratt has reversed his fortunes in Las Vegas. The former Bowling Green standout went 6-2-1 in his first 10 games with the Wranglers, earning ECHL goaltender-ofthe-week honors. Not bad for a 2004 Calgary Flames draft pick with no team to begin the season after Johnstown cut him late in training camp. After a pit stop in Toledo and a stint with Louisiana in the SPHL, Spratt, 24, has strengthened a position depleted by injuries and call-ups. “He’s relished the opportunity,” Wranglers coach Ryan Mougenel told the Las Vegas Sun. “He’s a competitor.” – MIKE MASTOVICH UNITED STATES LEAGUE FAMILY FUN Forget Philly, the Mile High city will be boasting some brotherly love, at least for Denver University recruits. Next year, Lincoln Stars center Jarrod Mermis, 20, will join the Pioneers followed…

NHL Team Reports What Happened?

Anaheim BAD LOSSES on home ice early meant playing catch-up all year. Losing Chris Pronger and Francois Beauchemin created big holes that Steve Eminger and the since-traded Ryan Whitney and Nick Boynton couldn’t fill. Young stars Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry and Bobby Ryan put up solid numbers, but didn’t handle the heavy lifting all that well, especially in tough times. Injuries contributed to secondliners Saku Koivu and Teemu Selanne not finding chemistry. Play was spotty all season, from special teams to sheer effort. – ERIC STEPHENS Carolina JUST ABOUT everything that could go wrong did for the Hurricanes – injuries, falloffs from career years, bad luck. A 14-game losing streak (0-10-4) early put Carolina in an impossible position. Then, just when it looked like they would collect a top-three draft pick, the Canes rallied to get within…

HOWSE BUILDING

RYAN HOWSE was introduced to hockey on the roads of his native Prince George, B.C. “Playing road hockey, you’d always want to be the person who scored in overtime,” said Howse, an 18-year-old left winger with the Chilliwack Bruins. “Growing up loving hockey so much and seeing all the good players (on television) made you want to score goals and be the hero.” Back then, Howse was a fan of Detroit superstar Steve Yzerman while aspiring to play in Prince George, though not necessarily with the WHL’s Cougars. Howse’s father, Jason, was a goaltender with the B.C. Jr. League’s Prince George Spruce Kings. Although Ryan was able to emulate his father by playing with the Spruce Kings, the comparison extended only so far. “I wanted to be a goalie, but my mom said no,”…

JERSEY HOUND

The WHA left a lasting impression on the hockey world and team logos were a big part of that. Hartford and Edmonton both had classics, but how about the old Fighting Saints? Minnesota’s mascot looks like no other and his impish grin is so hockey it’s incredible. The team traditionally wore blue, but in its final season switched up to an impressive red edition. They couldn’t draw fans, but long live the Saints.…
