JERSEY Hound
Early returns on new third jerseys for the 2009-10 NHL season are promising and it seems subtlety is back in vogue. Minnesota, which usually does well in the uniform department, will once again look strong, this time in a high school-inspired jersey in green and wheat (not white, mind you) with a hint of red. The script logo on the front is cool and the colors work – now all the Wild needs is to deliver that new offense they promised on the ice. MINNESOTA WILD 2009-10…

CHAMPS NO LONGER
Exactly one year ago, the European hockey market was abuzz with the Champions League and the inaugural Victoria Cup, a challenge between a European champion and an NHL team. Swedish clubs were rumored to be breaking away from the Elitserien to join the best Finnish, Danish and Norwegian teams. The KHL was also rumored to be expanding to the Czech Republic, Italy or Switzerland. Fast-forward a year later. The second Victoria Cup, featuring the 2009 Champions League-winning Zurich Lions and the Chicago Blackhawks, was set for late September. But that’s it for good news. But the Stars aren’t sure he’s their guy after last season’s 2.81 goals-against average and .898 save percentage. So Dallas will wait – and Turco will do everything he can to convince the team he should stick around. The Stars have no real answer for a replacement right now, but they might rather face that uncertainty than another year of Turco…if he underperforms.…

Snapshots
IT’S OFFICIAL: Hockey players have pucks of steel. That fact was confirmed by former world heavyweight champion Joe Frazier when he visited Flyers goalie Ray Emery, whose helmet features an image of the legendary boxer. Frazier, a Philadelphia resident, had this to say when comparing his sport to hockey: “Boxing is not close to hockey. It is a tough, tough game. In boxing, it’s 1-on-1. In hockey, you can get hit by two or three guys at the same time. Man, that’s rough.” HANG IN THERE Mathieu Schneider. With Patrice Brisebois retiring after 18 NHL seasons, Schneider, 40, is the last player in the league to win a Stanley Cup while wearing a Montreal Canadiens jersey (with the ’93 Habs). Then again, maybe Schneider’s Canucks will call up 42-year-old Mike Keane…
