Carolina
CAMP BATTLES The Canes lineup hasn’t been this set heading into camp in years. As things stand, 21 spots look cut and dried. The only question is if any of Carolina’s young players make too strong a case to be sent to the AHL. The plan is to have Brandon Sutter, Zach Boychuk, Drayson Bowman and Jamie McBain play together in Albany before moving up to the NHL next fall. But one of those four could play his way onto the roster. There is also competition for the depth defenseman spots. Tim Conboy, on a one-way contract, is the logical shoo-in as the seventh guy. If Carolina decides to keep an eighth blueliner, Brett Carson and Bryan Rodney top the list heading into camp.…

TRUE BLUE CAPTAIN
TED KENNEDY DID NOT GRACE the Toronto Maple Leafs with his presence much in recent years, but a couple of seasons ago he was on hand for an embarrassing moment at the Air Canada Centre. During a TV timeout, the Leafs displayed a short tribute to Kennedy on the scoreboard and then introduced him to the crowd. The applause for Kennedy from the throng of corporate welfare bums occupying the most expensive seats in hockey could be described as tepid at best. Without exaggeration, it was slightly more than what they likely would have given to Lou Franceschetti or Rocky Saganiuk. They should have been ashamed of themselves. The Leafs should have been too, but given the way they have treated their former players over the years, perhaps it shouldn’t have been…

Nashville
CAMP BATTLES The candidates just keep piling up for the Predators’ third-line center position. Possibilities at this point include Ben Eaves, Marcel Goc, Ben Guite, Cal O’Reilly, Mike Santorelli and Colin Wilson. Goc and Guite have the most NHL experience in the bunch, but both are more defense-minded players and will likely be dropped down into the fourth-line mix. O’Reilly and Santorelli got their first tastes of the NHL last season, with O’Reilly emerging as the more savvy player and Santorelli the pivot with more raw skill. Wilson, a Hobey Baker finalist last season, will get a long look because of his size and scoring touch.…

Anaheim
CAMP BATTLES Jonas Hiller seized the starting job in net down the stretch last season and solidified his hold with a stellar playoff showing. The man he bumped, 2003 Conn Smythe winner and ’07 Cup winner Jean-Sebastien Giguere, has made it known he won’t be comfortable in a backup role. And if Giguere is able to overcome last year’s personal turmoil, including the death of his father, Claude, the Anaheim crease will be a very competitive place. Only adding to the storyline are the two years and $12 million remaining on Giguere’s contract as well as the fact Hiller, who will earn $1.3 million this season, stands to become an unrestricted free agent next summer.…
