DEVILS DO IT THEIR WAY
REBUILDING IS A WORD that does not exist in the Devils dictionary. After all, it suggests falling out of playoff contention as the roster is retooled. Although the Devils will have a significantly different look, including a new coach, GM Lou Lamoriello believes the team can be changed without the usual growing pains. “I don’t think this is a change in direction,” Lamoriello said. “It’s a change of people pushing other people. The core is still there. We want to put some young people in this lineup. Remember, we haven’t won the last two years. We won during the regular season. We’ve got to get some new people in there.” They lost coach Brent Sutter, who failed to get the team past the first round of the playoffs in his two seasons. Sutter…

KINGS RICH IN KIDS
IF THERE’S ONE WORD that keeps coming up in association with the 2008-09 Kings, it’s “almost.” The young Kings were almost experienced enough, almost talented enough, almost tough enough and almost ready to contend for a play-off spot in the Western Conference. Problem is, they came up short everywhere. With one of the youngest rosters in the league, and a couple major holes among their top six forwards, the Kings dabbled in the playoff race for a while, but ultimately fell into 14th place in the West. There’s hope though that the Kings have made the necessary moves to contend this season. Most of the incoming players are expected to contribute with toughness and leadership and three key additions will help the Kings sink or swim. Justin Williams, acquired in the deal that…

STABILITY BELIES BUFFALO
CHANGE COMES SLOWLY in Buffalo. Just look at GM Darcy Regier and coach Lindy Ruff, the league’s longest-tenured tandem. They are filling their roles for the 13th straight season. But if the duo can’t suddenly inject a change in team attitude, there might not be a 14th. The buzzword in the Sabres organization is “compete.” Simply put, the Sabres didn’t have enough players who did so during the past two playoff-free seasons. The effort was too often lackluster, the passion too often missing. So Regier set about finding players who will battle and Ruff is determined to make sure they do. The Sabres finished 10th in the Eastern Conference for the second straight season, this time falling two points shy of the final playoff spot. Ruff wants the players to remember that…
